Google AdWords Local is a free tool that helps you find your potential customers online.It works like the real estate agent or building inspector from the olden days. You can fill out a keyword form and it will generate a list of search queries, around 8,500 keywords. You can then search on those keywords using Google or any other web browser. The Brits call this a ‘keyword planner,’ and we call it local SEO.

Year after year, local SEO is ranked as one of the top strategies for growing your local search traffic.

Local SEO is incredibly important for local businesses as there are millions of potential customers for them each month. Local SEO helps you improve your ranking in the local search results which can increase conversions, lower your competition, and potentially increase your sales.

Today I'm going to show you how to find your search term optimization keywords list from Google and start optimizing for those searches.

 Make sure to have exporting your keyword-optimized pages set up on your local Sitemap.

. Get your initial list of search queries.

 Record your keywords in your spreadsheet so you can track their "future" performance. Here's an example of how an SEO keyword list might look for a client in an industry I typically work in:

 The keywords here are sorted into different categories such as organizational, keyword research, NAP, and local, along with a fixed number of results each. 

. Pull out keywords from any website that ranks highly for those search queries.

 Visit web pages ranking for the search terms, especially if the page currently ranks first. From this list, go to sites that currently rank behind the top two results (if applicable) and record the queries they are ranking for and those that might be relevant to your client's (or your) sites.

 Once you're in positions 3-4 on the local SERP, record the terms they are linking to (from their own site). Then go to keyphraseology.com and record even more keywords for each page.

Keyword research is incredibly important because it will give you a head start on keywords that are searched in bulk. You can usually learn who is doing business with you based on their searches, and if you can set keywords that are eminently searchable, your traffic and sales will skyrocket.

It’s also useful for discovering general search phrases and framework terms that you can use for keyword research. Without getting too specific — general phrases can be used to help you decide on keywords, while framework terms permit you to avoid potential competitors.

Now that you understand the more general words and phrases that you can use to start building a list of your potential keywords, it’s time to move on to what street you want to hit. Again, it’s difficult to find the most energetic streets for your keywords, but below are some general considerations when choosing descriptive keywords to include in your content.

The keywords you choose must make sense; your keyword’s subject line should fit the description of your article. If your whimsical article title is “How to Beat Panic Attacks — According to Science,” it would be weird and unusual to get traffic from people searching “quickly become panic attack prone,” not to mention the fact that the phrase “quickly becomes panic attack prone” is generally not a good subject line.

Secondly, keywords should be used as broad as possible. If your target keyword is “do-it-yourself home renovation,” then you would probably want to include the phrase “do-it-yourself home renovation techniques” to propel your article to the most energetic page.
